Half Cent on the Ballot

Sunday, October 19th, 2008
In August the County Commission voted to place the question of raising the sales tax .50%.  This increase, if approved by the voters, would result in additional funds for education for the Blount County School system if approved at the county level.  IF the question fails of the County-wide referendum the Cities of Maryville and Alcoa will submit this same question to voters in their respective cities.

The reason I am writing about this is I fear that Blount County residents believe if it is voted down it will not happen, this is not completely true.  If the County residents vote against it and the cities enact it via a referendum, the county residents will still pay the tax when shopping inside the cities boundaries.  However the County system would not receive any of the funds.

It is going on 1 month since this has occurred, the vote by the commission.  It is going to be interesting to see what transpires on both sides of the question of whether to vote yes or no.

Just remember......

In defeating the question one does not necessarily escape the tax due to the location of the business locations where goods would be purchased.

Think about it!
